π A Zine Every Day for a Year π
I love making zines. I make them to document my life, to share ideas, and to make little jokes. In October, I took on the challenge of making a zine every day for a month. The result was fabulous! I wrote, drew, and folded 30 zines about gender, climate change, scary movies, demonic cats, and despair. At the end of the month, I felt like I could keep making zines forever. βI have a million ideas!β I thought. βOr maybe more likeβ¦ 300 ideas.β
So Iβve decided that in 2019, Iβll make a zine every day for a year.
Can I do it?! Definitely.
Can I do it without going broke? Thatβs a maybe. Making art for the world takes time and effort. As a freelancer, my income fluctuates rather wildly each month. Sometimes I get paid well and on-timeβ¦ sometimes I have to bother a publisher to pay me for months before a check finally shows up.
Thatβs why I started a Patreon. Patreon is a website where people can pay artists, writers, musicians, and other makers a small amount of money a month to support their work. I feel conflicted anti-capitalist feelings about this (is it commodifying friendship?) but after a year of thinking hard about it, I think itβs a way for consumers to pay for art they love in an ethical way, cutting out the middleman of a store or a publisher.
If you want to support me in my next year of writing and zine-making, please sign up to support me on Patreon. The levels start as low as $2 a month and go as high as $30 a month, if youβre a ridiculous person who wants to get all 365 zines.
Also, starting in January, Iβll only be sending out this newsletter once a month for free to yβall. Patreon supporters will get the newsletter every week, so if youβve enjoyed reading, please pitch in to keep getting this letter every week. A typical newsletter takes me about three hours to put together and I canβt afford to put in that time every week for free.
No pressure at all if you canβt afford to pitch in or just donβt want to. Iβll still be posting all my zines publicly on Instagram and sending out this letter packed with recommendations and feelings once a month.
Thanks for all your encouragement and kind words this year! I feel really, truly honored that you all listen to what I have to say.
Hereβs a photo of my on a freezing cold Washington ferry going boldy into 2019!
p.s. Send me your zine ideas, I need 365.Β
